The right capital at the right time
Healthcare investing
-
Early-stage & venture
RA Capital’s venture investments support companies through discovery, preclinical development, and early clinical milestones. We originate the conviction to lead seed and venture rounds, identifying and financing breakthrough science.

-
Structured capital
For commercial-stage companies, RA Capital offers customized credit and structured solutions. Our structured capital team provides flexible financing to fuel growth, product launches, and strategic initiatives.

Healthcare companies that fit our focus are those that:
- Develop novel therapeutics, diagnostics, devices, or life science tools. We invest across modalities and sectors within healthcare and life sciences.
- Address unmet needs with strong scientific or clinical rationale. RA Capital looks for meaningful innovation, not incrementalism.
- Face complex regulatory, translational, or evidence challenges. If inventing the future of health was easy, everyone would do it. RA Capital specializes in complex scientific opportunities where our expertise adds value.
- Aim for long-term impact and value creation. We’re “patient capital” focused on building enduring companies, not engineering quick flips.
Planetary health companies that fit our focus are those that:
- Solve critical problems in minerals, manufacturing, energy, agriculture, or environmental services
- Have near-term paths to commercialization (2−5 years)
- Can scale profitably without permanent subsidies
- Address real market needs with strong value propositions
We’re less excited about companies that are fundamentally business model or commercial execution stories without significant scientific or technological innovation. We’re investors who back great science and great teams.
-
After investing, we typically engage in several ways:
Board participation: For private companies, a member of our team often joins the board as an observer or director. This person may also serve as a conduit to relevant RA Capital services and capabilities.
Strategic guidance: We can provide ongoing counsel on clinical development, competitive positioning, and scientific validation. This might mean helping interpret clinical trial data, pressure-testing regulatory strategy, or advising on indication selection.
Fundraising and partnership support: We can help articulate evidence-based value propositions to other investors, pharma partners, and acquirers. We can introduce companies to our network and help them think through optimal financing strategy.
TechAtlas analyses: When appropriate, we can share our therapeutic landscape maps and insights to help portfolio companies optimize their positioning and identify strategic opportunities.
This sustained involvement reflects our commitment to deep, long-horizon support for scientific innovation. We’re not just capital providers; we’re active partners throughout the journey.

When we invest in private companies, a member of the RA Capital team often joins the board as an observer or director.
This isn’t about control – it’s about partnership and support. Board participation lets us stay close to the science, understand the challenges you’re facing, and deploy our resources most effectively.
-
Typically, yes — if we hold a director seat. Observerships typically terminate at the IPO.
For companies where we have significant ownership and conviction, continuing board participation through the public markets transition can be valuable. RA Capital understands the public company environment well and can help management teams navigate the shift.
-
We step off a board when we no longer feel that we can add value at the board level (e.g., the company has a clear plan and is well-capitalized and now just needs to execute) and when we feel that the company would be better served by having others occupy that board seat.
RA Capital’s goal is always to be helpful, not to accumulate board seats. If someone else can be more valuable to the company at a particular stage, we’ll make room for them.
