One of our guiding principals here at RApport and RA Capital is that we learn collaboratively; not just internally, but with the rest of our community as well. RApport is an important part of that (and as always, we encourage you to reach out with questions, comments, and op-ed ideas: rapport@racap.com), but RA University – in which many of our readers are already enrolled – is another. Recently, we’ve been rolling out RAU’s newest, on-demand course: Biotech Unveiled: Understanding the U.S. Biomedical Innovation Marketplace and its Global Role.

RAU has gone through a number of iterations over the years, starting as an in-person seminar, later becoming a series of recorded webinars. Biotech Unveiled is our first course designed to meet students where they are so that they can work at their own pace.

Giving away this one free answer to Rapport readers.

We start by answering some fundamental whys” of drug development, using a few of the most significant pharmaceutical breakthroughs of the last half-century as case studies. From there, we’ll pull back the curtain on what it takes to discover, test, and bring a medicine to market – the staggering risks, the lengthy timelines, and the meticulous regulatory pathways that pave the road from concept to FDA approval.

As we move deeper, we’ll explore the critical role of investors in fueling biotech start-ups and discuss how drugs that come to market with staggering sticker shock aren’t as pricey as they seem and eventually come down in price dramatically after going generic. You’ll see why insurance is crucial but often broken, and how better policies, incentives, and reforms might fix the system without crushing the innovative spark that drives progress. We’ll examine specific challenges, from antibiotic resistance to patent thickets, and weigh how best to ensure new medicines continue to be developed and made available to all.

Students who make it through the whole course and pass the quiz at the end earn a certificate that we hope to see posted all over social media. Plus, that certificate will make students eligible for later programs that are best suited for those with a robust understanding of this material. So please swing by, check out a few lessons, and join us down the rabbit hole that is the biomedical innovation market place.
